Watercolor: Beaches and Boats

Location: Held off-site at the Yarmouthport Firehouse. 340 Main Street
Instructor: Susan Stranz
Day: Tuesdays (five classes) Beginning June 27 (No Class July 4)
Time: 12:30-3:00pm

This is a class for those who want to learn more about painting beaches and things found at the beach, basic boats, dramatic summer skies and more… Subject matter will include water, beach, rocks, grasses, simple boats, reflections, sunsets and more. A variety of watercolor techniques will be used including wet into wet, dry brush, glazing and more. Some drawing and watercolor experience helpful.

**The instructor is extremely allergic to fragrance. Please do not wear fragrance to class.**

 

Materials-
• Pike Watercolor Palette or similar
• Watercolor brushes: Suggested sizes: round sizes 6 and 12, flat sizes ½ inch and 1 inch, wash brush 1 ½ inch, liner brush size 1 ** If you are a beginner and ordering new brushes, I suggest Princeton 6150 series. They are a good quality beginner/intermediate brush.
• Watercolor paper: Arches Cold Press 140 pound or 300 pound (or other ARTIST quality cold pressed watercolor paper) Large sheets of 22”x 30” are more cost effective and can be easily sized for smaller works. Also available in various size blocks. We use approximately 11 x 14 sheets for each painting. This is a quarter of a large sheet.
• Watercolor paint: Winsor and Newton Professional watercolor tubes or other ARTIST grade watercolor paint. You will need a warm and cool of each primary color. Bring any other colors you enjoy using. Some suggested colors: Permanent Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine Blue, Aureolin or Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red Deep, Winsor Blue (Red shade), Winsor Yellow or New Gamboge

Miscellaneous Supplies-
• Paper Towels and tissues: white
• 2 empty water container: large plastic yogurt or similar
• 1” masking tape (regular, not high tack, to secure paper to board
• sketch book: 5.5 x 8.5 spiral bound or similar
• HB drawing pencil
• 2 Erasers: kneaded and Mars Staedtler white plastic
• small towel to prop up work (old hand size towel)
• 2 Boards: I use foamcore: one 20” x 30” piece, cut in half (into two 15x 20 pieces, covered with clear packing tape or clear contact paper. This is used as a support to tape your paper to.

 

Instructor Bio-

Susan holds an M.S. in Education and is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design. She is also a Copley Artist Member as well as a CCAA Master Artist Member. She currently teaches Watercolor Painting and Drawing at local colleges and art centers. Susan is a member  of the National Watercolor Society, the Cape Cod Art Association, Cape Cod Waterworks, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, National Society of Botanical Artists, and Signature Member of Rhode Island Watercolor Society.
