Recognized as one of Cape Cod’s premier photographic artists, Dorene Sykes is inspired to show the interrelationship between nature and people, often where land meets water.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Dorene moved to New York City to study photography at the Germain School of Photography. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics at Hunter College. Her career progressed from budget analysis at the United Nations to customer support and marketing management at technology firms in Boston after earning an MBA degree from Boston University.
In 2004, Dorene settled into a new life on Cape Cod – a dream since visiting the Cape as a college student. She joined the Cape Cod Art Association Camera Club, covered events for the Enterprise newspaper, and began exhibiting her fine art photographs. After studying portraiture, she launched Dorene Sykes Photography, specializing in family portraits.
Dorene has also been on faculty at Cape Conservatory since 2010, teaching photography classes at the school’s Falmouth campus. In 2014, Dorene Sykes was a juror for the national All Cape Cod all-media exhibit and a judge at an Upper Cape Camera Club photography competition. She looks forward to future opportunities to support the art community.
A Certified Professional Photographer, Dorene is a member of the Professional Photographers of America, Professional Photographers Association of Massachusetts, and Professional Photographers of Cape Cod. In 2014 she was recognized as a Master Artist by the Cape Cod Art Association. She is also a member of the Falmouth Artists Guild. Many of her fine art photographs have won awards.
